Using event categories
Many organizations need to display different types of events on different calendar pages.  But they still want the convenience of a single master calendar.  They also want to be able to combine all events into a single calendar display for some purposes like scheduling.

DATES! makes all of that easy through the use of event categories.

With DATES!, you can create up to 100 different event categories.  A university, for example, might want to have different categories for "Performances," "Conferences," "Religious Holidays," "Lectures," and "Academic Calendar" dates.  A corporation might use "Employee Events," "Shareholder Meetings," "Board Meetings," and "Training Classes." A city government might use "Events," "Meetings," and "Deadlines."

Categories are optional, but easy to create.  You just log in to hardySystems.com, click a button to "Edit Categories," and fill in the blanks with whatever category names you want. You can change them at any time the same way--add new ones, rename existing ones, delete them. You can assign any event to one or more categories, or to no category whatever.

After you've created categories, the DATES! "list" views automatically group events by category.  Here is how event categories look in the 1-Col list view. This sample calendar uses only two categories, "Concerts" and "Sports."

Most important, you can have some web pages display all event categories, others display only selected categories appropriate to a particular department, and still others display all except certain designated categories. And category displays can be combined with all other DATES! formatting and filtering capabilities, such as the "plain text" output format or the "printable" format.

For example, here are different links that bring up different event categories, all from the same single master calendar.

  • All announcements, lectures, and sports, in the 1-Col list view
  • All meetings, on or after November 2, 1998, in the 2-Col list view
  • All events except concerts and lectures, in table view
  • All events that are any category, in plain text (useful for capture for word processing)
  • All events that are in one or more categories, in simple HTML (useful for capturing events for your own web pages)
  • All events, in printable monthly view, for the current month
  • All events except conferences, that happened before today, in 1-Col list view

  • DATES! It just works!
